I don't know if you've heard this rumour yet, but some people are saying that you can pay your car insurance on a month by month basis. Not all in one big lump sum, like you normally do, but just one month at a time, to make it a bit easier. Apparently, according to these rumours, you only pay a little bit extra to do it this way. I don't know. It sounds a bit far-fetched to me. So, I decided to do a bit of research on this whole 'pay monthly' idea, just to test whether people really do things like that.

I started at the supermarket. I waited until the shopping had all been scanned and packed. Then, when the lovely girl at the checkout said "That'll be £104.67, please." I offered her a down payment of £24.67, with a promise to pay eight monthly instalments of £10.50, leaving them with a profit of £4.00. It seemed fair. I won't tell you what she said, because we're not past the watershed yet, but I can promise you it wasn't in keeping with the old-fashioned 'Never swear profusely at the customer!' policy that shopkeepers used to have. It turns out she wasn't as lovely as I thought. Needless to say, I won't be going back there in a hurry. Certainly not as long as they have that picture of me from the CCTV on their window, anyway!

The next place I tried was the pizza parlour. Now, I had my doubts about even trying it there, because pizza isn't something I've had to save up for in the past. But I thought I ought to test the principle, regardless of cost. So, I ordered my usual - stuffed crust, half chicken, half spicy beef, extra olives, in case you're interested - and it came to the princely sum of £9.50. I got a free cola with that, so it's quite a bargain! Anyway, when I asked whether they'd prefer to send me a monthly invoice or set up a direct debit there was a bit of confusion and some harsh words were spoken! Not by me though, because I didn't like to speak with my mouth full of olives and chicken! I do have manners!

To cut a long story short, I have to conclude that the rumour of paying monthly for things is just that - a rumour! So don't say I didn't warn you, when your insurer laughs at you when you ask about convenient terms. But, just in case it turns out to be true, if you find out where you can do this, let me know. My car insurance is due for renewal next month
